Saturday Summer Hail
The heat of July brings back memories for many of us. It is a time to recall the good times of summer with family and friends.
I remember watermelon and fourth of July picnics when I was a kid. My dad could thump a watermelon with such perfection that every one I ever had was sweet and delicious. The melon was placed in a metal wash tub filled with water and ice to chill. The men wore suspenders and rolled up the sleeves of their shirts and played horse shoes. We kids would take off our shoes and play and swing and have so much fun. Women would sit around and gossip. The tables were laden with fried chicken, potato salad, the proverbial green beans and all kinds of deserts.
Next weekend the Hail gang will meet for a family reunion. There will be grandkids and great grandkids and the remaining brothers, Joe and John, and my sister Dorothy. I will not be able to attend. It makes me sad that I cannot be there. But, I still have my memories of family picnics in the summer time.
I love swings made out of old tires and a rope. I love when a rain shower comes and I can play in the rain. I love sipping ice tea with a sprig of mint. I love summer.
Well time to get out the grill and do some dogs. Watermelon is waiting to be thumped. The ice tea is chilling in my glass of ice.
It is a good day to be alive and have memories.
