Friday Just about the time a woman thinks her work is done, she becomes a grandmother.

No man is an Island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the Continent, a part of the main; if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friends or of thine own were; any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in Mankind; And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; It tolls for thee.

-- John Donne, Meditation XVII

Every Child born enhances me, because I am involved in womankind. Ask not for whom the faerie bell tinkle they tinkle for thee.

Yesterday I read two interesting bits of news. First, the bombing of London and death and destruction was a sad topic. Second, the birth of a friend's grandchild and love and hope was a happy topic.
Every 3 seconds a child is born on the planet earth. Every 3 seconds we are given a chance to grow and become a better world. Life and death are a continual cycle in the human experience. While it is shocking when we read news of mass death and destruction whether from war or natural disaster. Huge numbers can scare us and show how vulnerable we are as a species. It is also shocking when we read about a woman who gives birth to five or six babies at one time. For most of us life is not about the shocking unless it is in the media. For most of us birth and death are small little experiences that happen one by one. In our individual lives, the small compared to the collective have the greatest impact.
Families give us a reason to experience life to the fullest and to be recognized as special. In a world of 5 billion people, one person can appear pretty insignificant. We perhaps are insignificant except in the eyes of those who love or hate us. We all need to be recognized and applauded for enhancing the lives of others. When we are not we become little brats acting out so that we will get attention. We become punks or delinquents or terrorists. It is only when love is showered upon us by even just one person do we feel safe enough to love back.
Significance begins for a baby the moment it nestles in her mother's breast. It continues when she sees love reflected from the Mother. Next, she continues to grow into an enhanced being when she sees love from her father, her grandmother, her grandfather, her siblings and then from the extended community. There is no greater way to prevent disasters that are man-made then to find ways that mothers and children are fed, nurtured, and loved. The empowering of woman is the empowering of society.
